I’m not going to tell you to throw out your tarot deck. I’m not going to tell you the pendulum is fake. I use the tools myself.
But I am going to tell you what they actually are, because the answer changes everything about how you use them.
What a pendulum actually does
The pendulum moves because you move it. Not because a spirit grabbed it. It’s the part of you that already knows the answer finally getting a way to say it out loud, without your thinking mind talking over it.
In Chapter 12 of You Are Not You, I describe a pendulum as a way to ask your own subconscious a question your conscious mind can’t answer.
The card is a mirror
A tarot card is a mirror. So is the pendulum. They interrupt the noise long enough for the deep part of you to surface. That’s the whole technology. The answer was never in the card. It was in you.

So, are spirit guides real?
Here’s where I land. Whatever you’re experiencing is real to you, and a lot of it is your own deep knowing coming through. The trouble starts the second you believe the card knows something you don’t, or that a being on the other side is deciding your fate. The second you can’t make a move without pulling a card first.
That’s when you’ve handed your life to a costume. And that’s idol worship, in the oldest sense of the word. It doesn’t matter what the idol is. A statue, a saint, an ascended master, a channeled entity, a deck of cards. The form doesn’t matter. The direction does. You’re reaching outward to something you decided is above you, instead of inward to the only source there is.
How to use the tools the right way
1. Point them inward
Ask the card what you already know. Treat whatever comes up as a message from your own depths, not a prophecy.
2. Never let them decide for you
Use them to hear yourself, then decide as yourself.
3. Notice the dependence
If you feel anxious without your reading, that’s the tell. Same with signs: signs your manifestation is coming.
You’re not being guided by something outside you. You’re the one who’s been guiding the whole time.
