This one pisses people off. Good. Pissed off means awake.
Nobody can put a spell on you. Not your ex. Not the bitter coworker. Not the mother-in-law lighting candles in another country. Not the witch on TikTok, and not the generational curse somebody told you runs in your family.
Look at the word
You spell with letters. You cast a spell with words. Same word. A spell was always just a sentence somebody got you to believe.
That’s the whole mechanism. A spell doesn’t work unless you believe it. The moment you believe it, you start assuming it, and your life starts printing what you assume.
Can someone put a spell on you?
Here’s how Chapter 12 of You Are Not You puts it: you cannot be put under a spell, but you can absolutely put yourself under one.
When somebody gets “cursed” and hits a bad run, what actually happened? They believed they were cursed. They walked around assuming something was coming for them. And the subconscious did what it always does. It printed the assumption. The other person was just the trigger. The one pulling the lever was the one who believed it.

What a generational curse really is
I’m not going to tell you your family didn’t hand you anything. They did. Fear about money. Ideas about love. What people like you get to have. That stuff gets passed down, parent to kid, for generations.
But that’s not a curse from the sky. That’s programming. Borrowed beliefs, installed before you were old enough to say no. Which is actually good news, because anything that was programmed in can be programmed out.
Watch who’s selling the cure
They’ll tell you you need to be saved. That your energy needs clearing. That something’s blocking you, and they’re the only one who can see it. The candles, the readings, the $399 sessions. It looks like love. It isn’t.
Telling you that you need something outside yourself to fix something inside you is the real spell. The second you believe it, you belong to them. And it’s not just psychics. The media runs it. Your boss runs it. Sometimes your family runs it.
How to break generational curses
1. Make the list
Write down every person, force or thing you’ve ever secretly believed had power over your life. The ex. The parent. The bloodline. The evil eye. Be honest. That’s the exercise at the end of Chapter 12.
2. Find the sentence underneath
Every curse is a sentence. “Men in my family always leave.” “We’re just not money people.” “Something always goes wrong for me.” Write it down in the exact words you’ve been carrying.
3. Ask who wrote it
You’ll usually know the voice. Once you hear whose it is, it stops sounding like fate and starts sounding like somebody’s opinion. More on that: the voice in your head isn’t yours.
4. Stop agreeing with it
You don’t need a cleansing. You need to take the pen back. Stop feeding the old sentence your attention and start feeding a new one, every morning and night while your mind is open. Here’s how: how to change limiting beliefs.
The point
Nobody ever had that access. You gave it to them. So stop agreeing.
Related: stop saying “protect your energy”.
