<span>Meditation is one of the foundational practices we use at Self by Design to rewire the unconscious mind and transform the internal narrative.
You’ve lived most of your life operating from a set of inherited patterns — beliefs, reactions, and emotional blueprints that were programmed into you long before you had a choice. The Self by Design method is about taking your power back, consciously.
And one of the simplest, most profound ways to begin?
Meditation.
But here’s the truth that most people miss:
There are two distinct kinds of meditation, and each serves a different purpose in the process of becoming.
🧠 1. Insight or Mindfulness-Based Meditation: The Mental Dojo

This is the focus of today’s article.
Vipassana, or insight meditation, is a practice of observation and presence. You sit. You notice. You feel. And most importantly — you label.
This style is often called the mental dojo because it’s where you train your awareness to stay present, non-reactive, and deeply attuned to the now. It’s where you build the muscle of neutrality. You don’t try to manifest or visualize. You simply learn to witness the mind without getting caught in it.
This is the practice of clearing the noise — of creating space beneath the programming so you can remember who you truly are.
🔮 2. Visualization and Embodiment Meditation: The Creative Field
This second kind of meditation is about becoming who you were always meant to be.
Instead of just observing thoughts, you intentionally generate a new experience. You feel what it feels like to be the version of you that is whole, embodied, and fully expressed.
You may visualize:
Your future self living with purpose
A healed version of your inner child
The feeling of safety, love, peace, or power already present in your nervous system
This is a meditation of creation — not cleansing.
It’s not about detachment. It’s about alignment.
This is the path we often guide students through when doing deep identity work — embodiment, declaration, and reprogramming the emotional signature of the self.
But for today’s teaching, let’s step inside the mental dojo of Vipassana.
What Is Vipassana Meditation?

“Vipassana” is a Pali word meaning insight or clear seeing — the ability to observe your thoughts, feelings, and sensations without clinging to them or pushing them away.
It’s a practice of awareness without interference.
You don’t try to control the mind. You train the mind to observe itself — with compassion and neutrality.
The primary technique in Vipassana meditation (especially within Burmese traditions like that of Mahasi Sayadaw) is labeling, also known as noting.
What Is Labeling in Vipassana?
Labeling is the gentle act of mentally naming what’s happening in the present moment.
If a thought arises, you note:
“Thinking, thinking”
If a physical sensation comes up:
“Tingling, tingling” or “Pain, pain”
If an emotion surfaces:
“Sadness, sadness” or “Irritation, irritation”
The practice isn’t about analyzing or controlling — it’s about bringing unconscious experience into conscious awareness.
And in that awareness, something changes.
You are no longer inside the story.
You are the one witnessing the story unfold.
Why Labeling Works (Neurologically + Spiritually)

Labeling helps you shift from being the actor in the story to the observer of the process.
This works on multiple levels:
🧠 Neurologically: Labeling engages the prefrontal cortex and calms the default mode network (responsible for mental noise, ego chatter, and time-based thinking).
💠 Energetically: Labeling breaks the unconscious fusion with emotional states and dissolves their charge.
🌀 Spiritually: You begin to experience the impermanence and non-identity of all things — a key insight on the path of awakening.
The act of naming allows you to step out of automatic reactivity and into conscious space.
This is the very foundation of liberation.
How to Practice Labeling in Meditation
Here’s how to begin:
Sit comfortably in silence. No music, no guidance, just stillness.
Notice the breath. Let it move naturally.
When something arises — a thought, sensation, or emotion — gently note it.\n
Examples:“Worrying, worrying”
“Heat, heat”
“Judging, judging”
“Tightness, tightness”
Return to the breath. No need to fix, control, or change anything. Just witness.
The tone of the labeling should be soft, kind, and neutral — like a compassionate narrator.
Off-the-Cushion Practice: Labeling in Daily Life
Vipassana isn’t just something you do on the cushion. It becomes a way of moving through life.
You can label in the middle of daily moments:
While washing dishes: “Thinking, thinking”
During traffic stress: “Impatience, impatience”
When overwhelmed: “Overthinking, overthinking”
Even during joy: “Gratitude, gratitude”
Each label is a micro-moment of returning to presence.
Each one breaks the trance of identification.
The Integration: Why Both Types of Meditation Matter
Now that you understand the power of Vipassana and labeling, here’s the bigger picture:
You need both forms of meditation to truly rewire your mind and redesign your identity.
Vipassana Meditation:
Clears old patterns
Trains the mind in presence
Builds emotional neutrality
Creates space
Visualization & Embodiment Meditation:
Installs new beliefs and emotions
Aligns you with your chosen future self
Reprograms your identity
Fills that space with intention
One empties the cup. The other fills it.
One observes. The other creates.
One is clearing. The other is designing.
This is why Self by Design combines both. We teach you to first become aware of the pattern, then rewrite the pattern using visualization, breathwork, declarations, and emotional embodiment.
Final Thought
Vipassana is a sacred return to awareness — to the truth that you are not your thoughts, not your stories, and not your pain.
It’s the training ground.
Visualization and identity meditation are the blueprint you install once that ground is clear.
When you use both, you’re no longer reacting to life.
You’re designing it.
